The Alkali Team focus on creating better fins that add to the experience.
We work with core shapers and surfers, referencing and adding to our library of fin templates that have been hanging on the factory walls for 20+ years.
We believe that the world's core shapers and surfers have a wealth of knowledge and information that's worth pursuing. That's why we work with these legends, collaborating on fins that will add another dimension to a particular surfboard shape or style of surfing.
The roots of Alkali Fins go back as far as 1993 on the North Coast of New South Wales. Phil Way moved the family Kingswood out of the garage and began crafting batches of handmade fins for local surfers. With dust and fumes permeating the suburban street, the neighbours weren't as stoked as the customers, but the quality of Phil’s fins soon created enough demand to warrant a genuine factory, and Fluid Foils was born.
Over the years, Phil built his craft around building custom fins for a respectable list of shapers, pros, and anyone that knew the value of a skilfully foiled fin over the moulded plastic crap that flooded the market.
After nearly 20 years of resin fumes, dust and extractor fans, Phil handed the reins to his step-son Nathan and best mate Craig, who had been around the factory since the start.
With a refreshed team, we rebranded as Alkali Fins. Phil helped train our young team in fin design and production, and we continue to call on him for advice when developing new ideas.
